Accessibility statement

BBQ is for everybody, and so is this website. Here's what we've done to make it easy to use, where we know it still falls short, and how to tell us when something's in your way.

Our goal

We aim for tipsybrisket.com to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Those guidelines explain how to make web content work for people with disabilities, including people who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have motor, cognitive or learning disabilities.

What we've done

  • Color contrast. Text and buttons are checked against the AA contrast ratios. We darkened our brand red and the sanctioning-body colors on the cookoff calendar so white text on them stays readable.
  • Keyboard friendly. Menus, buttons, the search box, the calendar filters and the contact form all work with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing you'll reach with the Tab key.
  • Screen readers. Pages use real headings, landmarks (header, navigation, main content and footer) and labeled form fields. Icon-only buttons such as the menu, search and social links have text labels.
  • Images. Photos and recipe images have text alternatives; decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers.
  • Touch targets. Buttons, links and pagination are sized for fingers, not just mouse pointers.
  • Motion. Animations are short and subtle, and nothing flashes. Videos never autoplay with sound.
  • Zoom and mobile. The site reflows to a single column on small screens and works when zoomed to 200% and beyond.

How we test

We check every page template with automated WCAG 2.2 testing (axe-core) at desktop and phone sizes, check colors against the contrast ratios, and test menus, forms and the calendar with a keyboard. We re-test whenever we add a new kind of page.

Known limitations

  • Contest fliers. Fliers on the cookoff calendar come from the sanctioning bodies (IBCA, CBA, KCBS, SCA and Lone Star) and are often images or PDFs without text versions. The key details (date, location and organizer) are always written out as text on each cookoff page.
  • Videos. Some of our Instagram reels don't have captions yet. We're adding them, and the results are always written out next to the video.
  • Third-party content. Embedded Instagram and YouTube content, the affiliate stores we link to, and the sanctioning-body websites are run by other companies, and we can't control how accessible they are.
  • Older posts. A few posts from our early days may still be missing image descriptions. We're working through them.
